Is Ignorance Bliss?

Does May know about Archer's unadmitted feelings toward Ellen? I believe, without a doubt, she does. After Archer justifys his excuse for going to Washington, May smiles and even encourages him to say hello to Ellen. However, this was no simple gesture. Wharton implys that May knows there has been rumor about Archer and Ellen, and that "the only proper thing" for her to do is to pretend that she is unaware. The latter describes May's reinforcement into her appearance of "innocence", or rather ignorance. This is really frustrating because May obviously knows theres something going on. Ignorance may have the appearance of bliss, but this is, surely, a short-lived persona.
